Special Events
METAV continually is picking up topics under discussion in the industry. At METAV 2014 attractive special shows again will gain the attention of the media. Besides the special show "Metal meets Medical" - a standard since METAV 2010 - the "MM CompositesWorld Arena" will take place for the second time. Further, a "Technology Forum" will again be organized by GFE Schmalkalden and a "Grinding Seminar" by ISF Dortmund.
Following please take a review of the events at METAV 2012:
METAV Technology Forum “Sustainable Metal-Cutting Processes”
Industrial metal-cutting processes have to meet a broad spectrum of disparate requirements. Productivity levels can be upgraded by means of cutting materials, geometries and coatings that are responsively matched to the duty profile and machining job involved. Improvements are determined both by the user and by the increasingly complex interaction between the machine and the tool.
The METAV Technology Forum “Sustainable Metal-Cutting Processes” adduces current examples to demonstrate how to master the complex influencing factors involved in optimising a metal-cutting production process. On two half-days, the focus will be on “Borehole machining from macro to micro” and “Hard-fine machining/high-precision machining”. Experts from the machine tool and tool-making sectors will be showcasing their solutions. The Technology Forum is being organised by the GFE (the German Society for Production Technology and Development in Schmalkalden) and by the Specialized Section Precision Tools within the VDMA.

Special Show Metal meets Medical “From One-of-a-kind to Bulk Production”
After the success of Metal meets Medical at METAV 2010, the initiative is to be continued under the heading “From One-of-a-kind to Bulk Production”. Within that special show solutions for the entire process chain for the manufacture of medical devices will be presented. Visitors can persuade themselves of the added value of complete solutions on the basis of real-life examples and applications ranging from artificial limbs designed to specific customer needs through to the bulk production of standard workpieces.

Joint stand “Technology Competence from North Rhine-Westphalia”
Following on their huge success at METAV 2010, Cluster ProduktionNRW, Autocluster.NRW, NanoMikro+Werkstoffe.NRW, CEF.NRW, EnergieForschung.NRW, EnergieRegion.NRW and the EnergieAgentur.NRW have again joined forces with the region’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, Energy, Building, Housing and Transport to organise a joint stand at the
forthcoming METAV 2012, the motto of which is “Efficient production”.

Symposium “Production Technology as the Key to Electromobility”
A symposium picking up the “Production Technology as the Key to Electromobility” topic topic initiated at METAV 2010 will offer in-depth reflection on the shared trade fair presence.
Program Symposium (in German only)
Special Show CompositesWorld Area “Composites for Lightweight Construction”
For users in the automobile, automotive supplier, aerospace and machine building industries as well as many other user branches, the CompositesWorld Area presents modern manufacturing and automation solutions for the processing of fibre composite materials. The special show is organised by the VDW in together with Carbon Composites network association, Augsburg and the trade magazine MM MaschinenMarkt, Würzburg.
The content of the special show is complemented by a lecture forum hosted by the Carbon Composites network association.

Special Show for Young People “Mechanical Engineering – a Job with Power”
This special show, jointly organised by the VDW-Nachwuchsstiftung and partners, is already a traditional feature of the VDW’s trade fairs. Top-ranking companies from the sector will be showcasing the services and opportunities they provide for the people they recruit. Contact persons from universities and technical colleges will be providing information on opportunities in technical training. For any pupils interested, trainees and students will be available to answer their questions.
Launch of the Blue Competence Machine Tools initiative at European level
CECIMO, the European Association of the Machine Tool Industries, will launch the Blue Competence Machine Tools initiative at European level. This press conference in Düsseldorf follows the first launch event in Brussels which took place on 17 February 2012. Blue Competence Machine Tools is the first common European initiative launched by a mechanical engineering sector which aims at raising the sustainability bar in manufacturing technologies and equipment.
The European machine tool industry is a strategic key enabling sector which provides production equipment and technology to all manufacturing industries, thus enabling energy-saving and resource-efficient processes in manufacturing. With the decision to join forces under the Blue Competence initiative, European machine tools makers commit to apply sustainable practices in process design, product development and in company management. The sector is determined to pool its resources and expertise to become the global technology leader in the area of sustainability and to reinforce its role in improving the quality of life in Europe. Blue Competence directly supports the climate and energy targets of the Europe 2020 Strategy and the EU Flagship initiative for a resource-efficient Europe.

CECIMO Mini Conference on Dematerialized Production Systems (DEMAT Project)
Funded under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission, the DEMAT project aims at decoupling production results from the material structure of machines by reducing significantly the material content of the machines and increasing their information content. The overall impact on the machine tool industry will be a drastic reduction in total-life-cycle impacts and costs of machines, as well as increased flexibility, modularity, reusability and performance. Coordinated by Tecnalia, the project comprises sixteen partners from seven European countries. This mini conference organized by CECIMO will present to the public the DEMAT (dematerialisation) approach and the state-of-the-play in the project. Presentation by Ph.D. Juanjo Zulaika Muniain, from Tecnalia.
